Facebook is trying it’s best to keep the small and big brands on it’s platform by updating Facebook Promotion Guidelines once again. In a blog post for Small Business, Facebook has released some updates for Facebook pages which according to them would make it easier to administer promotions for Brands on Facebook. Some major updates include:
- No need to run a campaign or a contest through a Facebook Application only:
Now Pages need not adhere to create a separate application tab for running contests and promotions with Facebook allowing businesses to collect entries by having users post on the Page or comment/like a Page post. The Brands now are also allowed to collect user information by asking the users to message their entries and allowing ‘Likes’ as a voting mechanism. Facebook earlier had specified that Brands cannot utilise Facebook utilities/actions like messages and content likes as a means to enter a contest. But clearly with a business interest in mind and as a way to bolster page reach for Brands, Facebook seems to have modified their earlier terms.As before, however, businesses cannot administer promotions on personal Timelines.
Facebook also prohibits Brands to ask their fans to tag themselves in photos in which they are not depicted and count it as a way to enter a contest. These moves make sure Facebook for users still remain a way to share authentic content with Friends and not become a place for entering some sweepstakes only and ruin the whole personal experience. But Facebook is exploring this to enabled in a later stage. When going through their updated Page Promotion Guidelines, Facebook while answering to the question of why asking people to like/post or share on their personal timeline to take part in a promotion, Facebook writes:
There are technical reasons for conﬁning the administration of the promotion to either a Page or in an app. For example, because people can choose to limit the visibility of the content they put on Facebook to only themselves, friends, or to a custom group of people, Pages won’t have the ability to access all of the entries that people post on their own Timelines unless these entries are public. We may explore enabling this in the future, but to ensure a good experience for administrators of promotions and prospective entrants to a promotion, we are limiting the administration of promotions on Facebook to Pages and within apps at this time.
